2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec

Hyundai says that there’s a demand out there for a less-expensive, more-performance-oriented Veloster Turbo, and the Korean automaker is betting that those clamoring for such an offering are willing to sacrifice content in order to get what they want. So, come February, Hyundai will offer shoppers the Veloster Turbo R-Spec: a de-contented Veloster Turbo with a few chassis upgrades for a target price $1000 cheaper than the standard Turbo.

“Just how de-contented,” we hear you ask. Gone is the proximity key with push-button start, leather seating surfaces are out, heated front seats are a luxury R-Spec buyers can’t afford, same for the driver’s side auto-up window, side mirrors do without repeaters, and the high-gloss black trim is scrapped, too. Instead, buyers get a red splitter and red rocker-panel accents, an R-Spec badge, an exclusive red-leatherette-trimmed interior featuring black mesh over red cloth, and a uniquely available Sprint Gray exterior finish.

Chassis upgrades are limited to stiffer springs, and reduced steering boost. Otherwise, the R-Spec is just about identical to the more expensive model. Its turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes the same 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque as the regular Veloster Turbo. The sole transmission offering is a six-speed manual with a shifter modified by B&M Racing, and it is the only other mechanical change to the car. The R-Spec also receives the same upgrades as does the rest of the 2014 Veloster Turbo lineup, including a new stability-control-based torque-vectoring function and an intake sound enhancer that pipes more volume to the cabin.
