Ferrari has added a turbocharger to the California. The new California T features a twin-turbocharged direct-injection 3.9-liter V8 that’s good for 552 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. Variable Boost Management and low-inertia twin-scroll turbines help keep lag to a minimum, and as a result, Ferrari says the California T can sprint to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 196 mph. Ferrari doesn’t say whether that’s with the top up or down.
If a direct-injection turbocharged V8 sounds familiar, it should. Maserati is playing with a similar configuration right now, but Ferrari insists that this engine is a different project entirely. With a flat-plane crank and different displacement, the only thing the two V8s officially share is a manufacturing facility. But something tells us there may be more than a little commonality between the two blocks.
