Will you miss 3 mph? When it comes to the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider on display at the 2014 Geneva auto show, we doubt it. Even though the convertible's top speed is 3 mph slower than that of its hardtop coupe sibling, we doubt anyone will complain about a terminal velocity of 204 mph.

Like the coupe, the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider uses a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine good for 641 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, along with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. McLaren says the convertible matches the coupe's 3.0-second run to 60 mph, although the droptop takes 8.6 seconds to reach 124 mph from rest, whereas the coupe does that deed in just 8.4 seconds.

McLaren didn't need to strengthen or reinforce the coupe's carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, resulting in a convertible with essentially identical performance and driving dynamics. In fact, the Spider's 88-pound weight gain is due only to the addition of a folding hardtop and its mechanism. The top can be raised or lowered in just 17 seconds when the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider is traveling as quickly as 19 mph.

In addition to the retractable roof, the 2015 McLaren 650S has a small heated rear windshield that can be lowered or raised regardless of the roof position. McLaren posits drivers might leave the glass up when the roof is down, so it can serve as a wind deflector. With the roof up, customers can lower the windows to allow more engine noise into cabin.

The 2015 McLaren 650S Spider is shown in Geneva painted in Tarocco Orange, a new entry on the McLaren color palette. As on the coupe, standard equipment includes carbon-ceramic brakes, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, navigation, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Alcantara upholstery. Both the coupe and Spider go on sale worldwide this spring.
