McLaren reveals MSO 650S Coupe concept

No sooner has the McLaren 650S gone on sale, the British supercar maker is already unveiling a new, one-off prototype previewing a package of styling updates for the firm’s Ferrari beater. This is the 2014 McLaren MSO 650S Coupe concept.

The story of the 2014 McLaren 650S is a whirlwind – a new model based on the same basic carbonfibre "Monocell" chassis as the firm’s first supercar, the 12C, it features a more powerful engine and even more advanced chassis components and electronics.

On top of that there’s the new front end styling inspired by the British brand’s awesome P1 hybrid hypercar, which McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has turned up to 11 with the latest concept.

MSO is an internal division of the company that works on bespoke and customer projects, and has chosen to reveal the new 650S concept ahead of its forthcoming tour of China, showcasing to the superpower nation what a real supercar should look like.

The new 650S additions have pedigree, too. With aerodynamics inspired by McLaren’s 12C GT3 race car, this bodykit changes form and function.

At the front, there’s a new, more prominent front splitter and air intakes – made out of carbonfibre, naturally – as well as some larger carbonfibre side blades on the car’s flanks to channel more air into that 650hp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

At the rear, the 650S concept is much more muscly. The GT3-inspired bumper gets a carbonfibre centre section, teamed with a larger "unique MSO" carbonfibre diffuser and airbrake.

The new door blades offer "increased improvements to the airflow along the edges of the bodywork," according to McLaren, while the new splitter and rear end aerodynamics should further improve downforce.

All the bodywork additions are satin finished, which combined with the concept’s new "Agrian Black" paintwork (specially developed in house and with a deep ruby red metallic flake in direct sunlight), give the MSO prototype 650S a properly stealthy appearance.

As you’d expect, the tweaks aren’t just limited to the exterior – although the engine itself doesn’t get any more power, the engine bay benefits from satin black carbonfibre detailing.

Inside, this one-off model gets fixed-back carbonfibre seats, similar to the lightweight items found in the P1 that save 15kg in total, trimmed in – you guessed it – carbon black leather.

There’s plenty more carbon for the dash and centre console, while the switchgear is finished in a contrasting gloss black.
